What Our Optometrist Looks for During the Eye Exam
Every child is different, so Dr. Miller considers your child’s age, vision, health history, and individual needs during the examination. Depending on your child, the exam may include checking:
- How clearly your child sees at different distances
- Whether a glasses prescription is needed or has changed
- How the eyes align and work together
- Different structures of the eyes and overall eye health
- Any symptoms or vision changes you or your child have noticed
Once the exam is complete, Dr. Miller will explain what he found and answer your questions.
Children's Vision Conditions
Myopia or Nearsightedness
Myopia makes objects farther away appear blurry while closer objects are easier to see. Dr. Miller can determine your child’s prescription and recommend appropriate vision correction when needed.
Hyperopia/ Farsightedness
Hyperopia, commonly called farsightedness, affects how the eye focuses light. An eye exam allows Dr. Miller to evaluate your child’s vision and determine whether glasses or other appropriate care is needed.
Astigmatism
Astigmatism occurs when the shape of the cornea or lens causes light to focus unevenly inside the eye. Dr. Miller can identify astigmatism during an eye exam and determine the appropriate prescription when vision correction is necessary.
Eye Alignment Concerns
An eye alignment concern can affect how the eyes point and work together. An eye exam allows Dr. Miller to evaluate eye alignment and determine whether additional care or referral is appropriate.
Signs Your Child May Struggle to See
Kids don’t always walk through the door and tell you their vision has changed. Sometimes, the first clues show up in the little things they do every day. You may notice your child:
